API 5L, or the American Petroleum Institute Specification 5L, is a widely recognized standard for steel line pipes used in the transportation of oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon products. The specification sets the requirements for the manufacture of seamless and welded steel pipes suitable for various applications in the energy industry. API 5L line pipes are essential for the construction and operation of pipelines that transport these valuable resources.

Manufacturing Methods:
API 5L line pipes can be manufactured using two primary methods:
Seamless: These pipes are produced by piercing a solid steel billet and then rolling it to form a seamless tube. Seamless pipes are known for their uniformity, strength, and suitability for high-pressure and critical applications.
Steel Grade: B, X42, X52, X60, X65, X70
Dimension: 1″/2″ – 24″
Process:hot rolling, hot expanding
Welded: Welded pipes are made by joining steel plates or coils through welding. They are available in various forms, including longitudinal (LSAW), helical (HSAW), and electric resistance welded (ERW). Welded pipes are suitable for less critical applications and are often more cost-effective.
Steel Grade: B, X42, X52, X60, X65, X70, X80
Dimension: 2″ – 30″
Process: ERW, SSAW, LSAW, HFW, JCOE.
Grades:
API 5L categorizes line pipe steel into different grades, each identified by a letter followed by a two- or three-digit number. The grades indicate the steel’s minimum yield strength and other mechanical properties. Some common grades include:
API 5L Grade B: The most commonly used grade for oil and gas pipelines.
API 5L X52, X60, X65, and X70: Higher-strength grades suitable for more demanding applications.
